City looking for new operator for Centre Stage, but Council rejects idea of selling building

The search is on for a new group to manage Nanaimo’s Centre Stage at 25 Victoria Road, but City Council isn’t willing to consider selling the building at this point.

The Centre for the Arts Nanaimo says it will stop running the theatre space at the end of June, because it couldn’t get an increase in its subsidy.

During a debate on a new request for proposals to run Centre Stage, Councillor Bill McKay suggested it’s time to consider selling the building.

But Fred Pattje argued that’s not the way to go.

Most councillors sided with Pattje’s view and the request for proposals won’t include an option to purchase, or a bigger subsidy.  That will stay at $11,350 a year.
