WCMRC base to be built in Nanaimo

The Western Canada Marine Response Corporation is planning to construct a new on-water spill response base in Nanaimo.
Construction is set to start in early 2018 and the facility is expected to be up and running in December of 2019.
Michael Lowry says the base is part of a larger expansion plan to meet enhanced response requirements associated with the Trans Mountain Expansion Project and it will double the Corporation’s capacity to respond to spills and cut response times in half in South Coast waters….

The base will provide initial rapid response for eastern Vancouver Island and will have the capacity to deliver equipment for a 20,000 tonne spill within 36 hours of activation.

The Nanaimo base will include moorage for 15 vessels and will employ about 35 people.

You can learn more at an open house in Nanaimo tomorrow (Tues, Nov 21) at the Best Western Dorchester Hotel on Church Street between 5 and 8.
