SCRD making changes to Drought Management Plan

2012 saw a severe drought that led the Sunshine Coast Regional District to impose some of the toughest watering restrictions they’ve ever had to use.

Now the lessons of that drought and a public survey are leading to changes to the SCRD’s Drought Management Plan.

One of the changes is an exemption for micro and drip irrigation, farmers, and commercial users when stage 1 or 2 restrictions are brought in. Under stage 3 commercial users would be asked to work with the SCRD on reducing consumption.

SCRD Chair Garry Nohr says they’ll also be asking agricultural users to join the metering program.

Input from that public survey is also leading to a simple change to the odd/even watering schedule to make sure all addresses get to water on Saturday or Sunday.  There would also be one hour less for watering in the mornings.
