No youth shelter in Nanaimo this winter

The City of Nanaimo will not be supporting a youth shelter again this winter.
Bruce Anderson, city manager of community and cultural planning says Council chose to support a youth shelter last winter but it appears as though it wasn’t needed…..
Anderson says no one really knew if there were homeless youth on the streets but Council felt, if that was the case, the youth should have somewhere, other than the adult shelter to go to.
The initiative cost the City taxpayers 75,000 dollars.
Anderson says some of the youth who used the shelter were in government care but, generally, any young people who did use the facility did have a home to go to.
