Nanaimo couple find knife-wielding stranger in their bedroom

A Nanaimo couple got a nasty scare when they awoke to find a stranger with a knife in their bedroom. Just before 2:00am on Wednesday, December 18, a woman called 911 to report a stranger in their home, in the 2100 block Meredith Road.

She screamed when she saw him, which woke up her husband. He confronted the suspect while she called police. The suspect pulled out a knife to threaten the homeowner and then escaped.

He was last seen running south on Tulsa Road. Nanaimo RCMP used a police dog to track him, but lost the scent where police believe the suspect had a car waiting for him.

The suspect had ransacked the home and stole a number of items. He is described as white, 5’10” with short dark hair. He was wearing a light grey hoodie and black gloves.

“The homeowner took the right measures by calling 911 immediately and letting the suspect leave the residence,” states Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong, spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP. “Whenever a person is brandishing a weapon, the best course of action is to keep yourself safe and not try to deal with an armed person. Let them leave.”
