Measles case confirmed in Nanaimo area

One case of measles has been confirmed in Nanaimo. Dr. Paul Hasselback, Medical Health Officer for Central Vancouver Island, says Island Health is investigating and implementing control measures.

Hasselback says Public Health staff are contacting exposed families to offer vaccinations to reduce the chance of infection. The most effective protection against the virus is two doses of the vaccine. It’s free to everyone born after 1970.

Anyone who suspects they have been exposed should see their doctor and notify the medical practitioner’s office before arriving to prevent spreading the disease to others.

Those wanting the vaccine should contact the Nanaimo Health Unit at 250-755-3342. The last time a measles case was confirmed on Vancouver Island was January, 2010. More information on measles can be found on the Health Link BC website.
