Baby beds available on the Island

British Columbia has one of the lowest rates of infant mortality in Canada, at 3 point 7 per 1000 live births.

Dr. Richard Stanwick, Chief Medical Health Officer says that rate is higher on Vancouver island.

To try to prevent some of that mortality, which is the result of sleep-related incidents in healthy infants, Stanwick says Island Health will be expanding their Baby Bed program….
The Baby Bed program offers families a free bed with solid walls, a firm mattress and fitted sheet, allowing infants to sleep safely.

The beds can be used until babies are up to four or five months old or when they begin to roll.

The baby bed program first launched on Vancouver Island in 2015 in the Cowichan Valley.
