Local NDP MLA asks for patience after budget update

There were some shortcomings when the new NDP Provincial Government announced their budget this week.

Those include a campaign promise to have a $400 rebate for renters, to cut ferry fares and $10 a day child care program.

Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nic Simons says this was only a budget update, and their full budget will be released in February.

Simons says people expect them to do everything all at once and he understands that because 16 years is a long time for people to wait for programs and services that are necessary to the public.

The government did, however, promise to spend $681 million over the next three years on education.

Patrick Bocking, Superintendent of School District 46 says although it’s early and there are no details of how much the Sunshine Coast will receive, he believes this is a positive direction the province is taking and says this new school year started out really well.

Bocking says education is critical to the successful future of the youth and they’re pleased that it’s an emphasis of our government.
