Ferries, Hydro, stamps… they're all costing more

Get ready to dig a little deeper for your ferry travel.

Another round of fare increases kicks in April 1st.  The average increase is 4 per-cent.  For people on the Langdale – Horseshoe Bay run that’s going to mean an extra 70 cents for a passenger and $1.90 for a vehicle.  Fares go up 75 cents and $2 on the Nanaimo – Horseshoe Bay run.

NDP Ferries Critic Claire Trevena says blame the government.

The NDP is also slamming the government for an increase in BC Hydro rates, that kicks in on the first as well

Energy Critic John Horgan says it’s adding insult to injury for workers from the Catalyst pulp and paper operations in Crofton, Powell River and Port Alberni.  They took a wage cut in 2012 to help keep the company afloat.

Horgan says the 28 per-cent Hydro increase over 5 years will wipe that out.

Oh, and if you want to send a letter to complain, that’s going to cost more too.  Canada Post is hiking the price of a single stamp to $1, up from 63 cents.  If you buy them in bulk it will only be 85 cents.
