The contamination rate in the recycling bags in Nanaimo is too high.
It’s dropped from 14 per cent to 10 per cent but Recycle BC has requested the City reduce their contamination to the provincial requirement of 3 per cent.
Crystal Yuen, with the City of Nanaimo, says to ensure everyone is aware what items are considered contamination, a worker will be going around neighbourhoods to survey residential curbside recycling….
Unaccepted material will be taken out and placed in a paper bag with a “Left Behind” sticker and a recycling guide.
If the yellow bag is highly contaminated the whole bag will be left behind and the resident will be asked to re-sort their waste.
