Dakota Ridge opening delayed

The Dakota Ridge Winter Recreation Area is delaying it’s opening.

The Sunshine Coast Regional District operated cross country, snowshoe and sledding venue just doesn’t have enough snow.  As of December 12th the base was just a few centimeters.

Parks Planner Sam Adams says they need at least a meter, and now they’re targeting December 21st, the Winter Solstice, as opening day.  Adams says it will be a real loss if they can’t open by Christmas.

“It’s definitely one of the busiest times of the year, and it’s very important for us to be open then, but having said that; the rest of the hills in British Columbia are in pretty much the same boat as us and there’s not much we can do about the weather,” he says.

Dakota Ridge isn’t the only ski area waiting on Mother Nature. Mount Washington at the north end of the Island, a resort usually blessed with lots of snow, remains closed as well.
