Sechelt budget heads to Council

Councillors in Sechelt are set to give three readings to their 2014 budget, after it passed a vote in Committee.  Getting the budget in place well ahead of the usual March deadline is a deliberate strategy, but the speed is making at least one councillor a bit wary.

Mike Shanks voted against moving the budget out of Committee on Wednesday, saying “I somewhat object to the rush that I feel we’ve had on this whole process.”

But Councillor Chris Moore says the new approach to budget-making is just another way Sechelt is leading the pack.

One of the items in the budget is a 250-thousand dollar renovation to the municipal offices, which are in the library building.

And Councillor Darnelda Siegers says with the library in need of space, the District should explore another option before spending money on renos.  She moved to have staff report back on the cost and feasibility of moving the District offices to another location and turning the entire building over to the Sechelt Public Library.

If the budget gets adopted as it stands now, the renovations at the municipal offices would start late next April. The report is supposed to be ready by the end of February.

Councillor Alice Lutes also voted against moving the budget forward, she objects to the inclusion of a 400-thousand dollar traffic roundabout.
