Competition Bureau demands sale of Shoppers DM in Sechelt as part of Loblaw takeover

A deal between Loblaw and Shoppers Drug Mart is putting the future of the Shoppers store in Sechelt in doubt.

It’s one of the biggest drug stores on the Sunshine Coast.

The Competition Bureau is forcing Loblaws to sell the store as one of the conditions for approving the bigger purchase of the Shoppers chain by Loblaw.

The Sechelt store is the only BC location effected, and Loblaw says it doesn’t expect it will end up closing.

A similar Competition Bureau ruling led to the last month’s sale of several Island grocery stores, including Safeway stores in Port Alberni, Duncan, and Ladysmith and the Thrifty Foods at Brooks Landing in Nanaimo, to Overwaitea.
