More budget debates yield money for E&N trail and arts & culture grants

Nanaimo Councillors have voted to put some money into the E&N trail project and beef up grants for the arts.

The decisions came Thursday, at the end of several days of detailed debate on the 2014 budget.

Councillors voted 6-2 Thursday in favour of $150-thousand for the E&N trail.

They’ll also raise the per-capita grant fund for arts and culture from $2.30 per person to $3.00 over the next three years, and increase the event fund.  Both moves were recommended in the Cultural Plan.

There’s also more information on the cost of dealing with the Colliery Dams.   The Technical Committee says it expects its costs to come in at around $770-thousand.  The City has already spent $1-million.  The new figures are in a report going to City Council on March 24th.
