Nearly 2 dozen Sunshine Coast seniors are taking advantage of Better at Home, and the people behind the program hope a community launch December 11th will bring in more potential volunteers and more clients.
Better at Home is a province-wide initiative run through the United Way using local groups.
Darlene Hood is coordinating it for the Sunshine Coast Community Services Society.
She says they’ve got a core of 3 staff and 13 volunteers already helping clients with things like friendly visits, light housework and grocery shopping.
Hood says while the whole point is to help seniors who want to keep living in their own homes, in a rural community it’s often hard to find out who those people are. “Those are the folks that we really want to be targeting and finding, and I think that’s going to happen through friends, family and neighbours,” she says. “That’s one of our missions of having this launch is to really spread the word of what this program has to offer and hopefully those people will be able to take it back and help us to find those people that are in need of the program.”
The community launch is Wednesday, December 11th at 11:30 at the Seniors Activity Centre in Sechelt.
Better at Home is also up and running in Parksville through the Society of Organized Services, and it’s slated to start in Nanaimo in early 2014.
