The Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District says its’ now been served with the documents confirming the Snuneymuxw First Nation court challenge of the decision to close schools in the Cedar area.

The new Chair of the SD68 Board, Dot Neary, says the Board is confident that it took all the right steps in creating the 10 Year Facilities Plan that calls for closure of Cedar Secondary,  Woodbank Elementary  and North Cedar Intermediate.

“The whole case is around the question of consultation,” says Neary. “At this point, the board will continue with the implementation of its decisions. The board is confident that it has followed the appropriate procedures in its consultation process, and it’s now a matter for the court to decide.”

Meanwhile, the Snuneymuxw First Nation argues the board decided to close the schools without consulting them in a meaningful way. The SFN is asking for the decision to close the schools to be struck down through a judicial review process.
