There’s a emu on the loose in Nanaimo. There were sightings Tuesday afternoon near Colliery Dam Park and Vancouver Island University. The 150-pound flightless bird, named Lucy, escaped from owner Tim Genner’s property on Nanaimo River Road in Cassidy two days ago. He says they’re not quite sure how Lucy escaped, but the bird has traveled about 20 kms from home.
Genner says Lucy is friendly, but will be hard to catch. He says emus are strong and fast; they can run over 40 km/h. He says anyone who spots Lucy can call Genner at 250-591-6131, Animal Control or Nanaimo RCMP at 250-745-1234.
