Measles outbreak being closely watched by local health authorities

A measles outbreak that started in the Fraser Valley has local health authorities reminding people to check their vaccination status.

The outbreak started in a Christian private school, but case have now popped up in the wider community, the latest involving a student at BCIT’s Burnaby campus.

Sunshine Coast Medical Health Officer Dr. Paul Martiquet says they’re monitoring the situation, and suggesting anyone born after 1970 ensure their shots are up-to-date.

North Island MHO Dr. Charmaine Enns says Island Health is keeping a close eye on things as well, because any measles outbreak is a concern.

Martiquet and Enns say so far there have been no cases reported on the Sunshine Coast or Vancouver Island.
