Fast ferry deal a balancing act says McKay

People hoping for the option of a fast passenger ferry between Nanaimo and Vancouver are still facing a chicken-and-egg dilemma.

Island Ferries confirmed March 14th they’re not going to be in a position to launch this summer, and they say the ball’s in the City’s court because they need a deal on terminal space to firm up their financial backing.

Councillor Bill McKay says they’re trying to find a balance between the long-term lease the company wants and the City’s need for flexibility in planning the future of the Wellcox Rail Yard.  He says another element in the negotiations is public opinion.

The talks are taking place behind closed doors, but McKay says he hopes they’ll be able to make some information public soon.
