Smaller crowds, same message as ferry protests continue

Dozens of protestors on the Sunshine Coast braved blustery weekend weather for another round of rallies against cuts at BC Ferries.

The BC Ferry Coalition says it’s likely their last demonstration for a while, but the political wrangling continues.

Sunshine Coast Regional District Chair Garry Nohr says coastal RD Chairs are meeting next week; and they plan to keep pushing for an economic impact study and “needs assessment”:

Nohr says the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities and the Union of BC Municipalities are also working on the issue.

There were also protests on Gabriola Saturday, and a group of around a hundred Quadra Islanders delayed sailings when they refused to pay.  RCMP were brought in.  One protest organizer called it an intimidation tactic.

The Coalition’s Jef Keighley says he’s confident the province is feeling the heat.

New reduced schedules are supposed to be released by BC Ferries before the end of this month, with the cuts taking effect at the end of April.
