Cedar schools court challenge underway in Victoria

The fight over the future of schools in Cedar has shifted to the courtroom.

A judge in Victoria is hearing arguments in the Snuneymuxw First Nation’s challenge of the Nanaimo Ladysmith School District facilities plan.  The plan calls for school closures, but Snuneymuxw says the Board didn’t do enough to consult them before moving ahead.

Doug White was Chief when Snuneymuxw filed the challenge, and he’s been watching the case.

The School District is arguing that the First Nation didn’t take advantage of the consultation opportunities they offered. SD 68’s lawyer will finish his presentation Wednesday.
