City willing to help pay for Morden Mine studies

Nanaimo Council is ready to put up some money for engineering studies at the historic Morden Mine.

The 101 year old mine site is part of the Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park south of Nanaimo.

And it still has the head frame and a structure known as a tipple from its days as a working colliery

The Friends of Morden Mine have been working to make sure those are preserved, and Friends co-president Eric Ricker told Council Monday they can’t do anything without getting the engineering studies.

Councillors voted unanimously to offer 75-hundred dollars, although the amount would go down if the Friends get money from the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation.
