Fireworks over ferries outside and inside the Legislature

Upwards of a thousand protestors crowded the lawn of the Legislature, trying to get the government to stop the cuts to BC Ferries.

The BC Ferry Coalition says it’s going to keep up the pressure on the Clark Liberals through to the next election if they have to, and Tuesday’s rally was meant to be their first big show of strength.

Coast FM’s Hilary Eastmure was with the protestors in Victoria.

As the demonstration got underway outside, in the Legislature Transportation Minister Todd Stone was defending the cuts in Question Period and calling out the NDP for not having a better alternative.

Powell River Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons, meanwhile, dropped the bombshell that Powell River’s junior hockey team could leave if cuts and fare increases continue.  However, late in the day officials with the Powell River Kings backed away from that.

The Coalition is planning to follow up with local rallies, including one on the Sunshine Coast and one on Gabriola Island, on the 15th.
