Plans for ferry cuts continue amid escalating protests

The BC Ferry Coalition’s mass protest against cuts to BC Ferries is taking over the lawns of the Legislature Tuesday.

While protestors try to stop the cuts, others are preparing for the reality.

The Gabriola Island Ferry Advisory Committee is meeting with BC Ferries on March 12th.   FACs along the coast are being asked to work with Ferries to find the most acceptable way to make the cuts, before the end of March.

Gabriola Chair John Hodgkins says the current plan for cuts could cause major congestion during the summer, so they’re suggesting a change.

Hodgkins says to make that happen the FAC has picked 40 other sailings they’d be willing to drop instead, including some late day trips on Sundays.

The Sunshine Coast FAC has already had its session with BC Ferries, and it too is suggesting a tweak.  They’ve asked that a mid-morning sailing be cut on Sundays in order to save the 6:20am departure from Langdale.  The FAC says that trip is vital for workers and local sports teams who need to get to the Lower Mainland.

The Ministry of Transportation says BC Ferries has to have reduced schedules ready by the end of March.
