Sechelt WWTP referendum passes. Voter turnout low

Voters in Sechelt have approved a $7.4-million dollar loan to help pay for the wastewater treatment plant, but the vote was close: 868 yes to 853 no.  The results are still preliminary.  Official results will be released Monday, March 10th.

However, only 23 per cent of the District’s eligible voters cast ballots. Turnout for the last municipal election in 2011 was just over 47 per cent.

The loan through the Green Municipal Fund also includes a $1-million grant, that Sechelt’s finance department says will cover the interest charges.

Construction of the $24-million plant is already underway, and is expected to be completed by the fall of this year.
