Stilwell glad Canada not pulling out of Paralympics

Amid the ongoing tensions over Russia’s moves in the Crimea region of Ukraine,  the Winter Paralympics are kicking off in Sochi, with 54 Canadian athletes competing in 6 sports.

Parksville Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell is a decorated summer Paralympian.  She told the Legislature Thursday she’s glad Canada hasn’t pulled out.

Ukraine announced late Thursday it too would participate in the Games, but many countries, including Canada, will not be sending any political representatives to the opening ceremony.

North Van’s Sonja Gaudet, a wheelchair curler, will be Canada’s flag-bearer.  The 47-year-old skipped team Canada to gold in 2006 and 2010.
