Tech sector has big impact on Nanaimo's economy

Nanaimo’s technology sector generated over $204 million dollars in revenues in 2012. Sasha Angus, CEO of the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation, says that’s part of what they learned through an impact analysis. The report was commissioned by NEDC and Innovation Island.

As of 2012, the sector was employing over 2,700 people and had a household income impact of about $133 million. With Nanaimo’s low cost of doing business, and high quality of life, Angus says it’s an attractive place for tech companies to set up.

He says they’ve surveyed a number of local tech companies about the challenges they’re facing, so they can follow up on those and help them grow. Angus says they’ll use the information to attract new companies to the region.

The full economic impact report is available online.
