It looks like upgrades at Nanaimo’s Caledonia Park, including new bleachers, are going ahead. Councillors voted Wednesday to include the $371,000 project in this year’s budget.
Aside from the bleachers, the project includes building a proper changing room for visiting teams, including shower facilities.
The motivation is to get the stadium – home to the Vancouver Island Raiders – up to standard to host a BC Football Conference championship game. Director of Football Operations for the Raiders, Jim Lozon says the upgrades are great news for the team.
The Raiders are offering $19,000 of “in kind” contributions, including helping out with demolition of the existing grandstand.
The new bleachers are budgeted at a little over $154,000 out of that $371,000, but City staff say that cost could go up or down depending on what happens when they put out a tender.
