Nanaimo recruiting for Mayor's Youth Advisory Council

The City of Nanaimo is looking to get young people more involved and interested in municipal politics. The City needs to recruit 12 young people between the ages of 15 and 24 for the new Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council.

Nanaimo Mayor John Ruttan says Vancouver Island University students had some good questions when he visited the campus on Tuesday.

Ruttan says he hopes by engaging young people, they’ll boost voter participation rates. Only about 18 per cent of Nanaimo residents typically vote in municipal election.

The Youth Advisory Council will four times a year, including twice with the Mayor and twice with all of council. March 31 is the deadline to apply.
