Gibsons' "Cart Lady" Helen Alp dies at 82

The Town of Gibsons has lost one of its most colourful and best-loved residents.

Helen Alp died over the weekend at St. Mary’s Hospital. She was 82.

Alp came to Gibsons more than 30 years ago with her husband and the couple ran a successful janitorial business.  After his death she took to walking the town with her trademark cart, collecting recyclables and doing her part to keep the streets clean.

Former Mayor Barry Janyk was a close friend.  He says the town hasn’t been the same since Alp became too ill for her daily rounds.

Janyk says not long before he left office Council had been talking about dedicating a bench for Helen near the mid-point of the Gibsons Way hill and he’s hoping the Town might be able to follow through on that or do something else to honour her.

The funeral is scheduled for 1pm Friday, March 7 at the Devlin Funeral Home, to be followed by a reception at Leo’s Tapas and Grill.  The public is welcome.
