There was an outpouring of opposition to a proposed water supply deal with Lantzville at Nanaimo City Council.
Jim Taylor of the Nanaimo Ratepayers Association says the agreement leaves too many unanswered questions.
Councillors Bill McKay, Jim Kipp and Bill Bestwick also raised concerns, calling it a bad business deal for Nanaimo and citing the need to conserve a precious resource.
But Councillor Ted Greves, and the majority on Council, favours taking a regional approach to Lantzville’s water problems.
The deal was approved Monday in a 5-3 vote. It now goes to Lantzville Council.
Council was more united in their views on a new cell tower on Hammond Bay Road.
Telus wants the 35 meter tower to improve service in what’s become a well-known wireless dead zone in the city.
There’s been some community oppostion, for various reasons, but the main issue some Councillors have is the company’s request to build the tower within 15 metres of a wetland. The usual setback is 30 metres.
Councillor Bill McKay was the only one to support the Telus request. The city’s next move is a letter to Industry Canada opposing the plan.
