Three hurt in serious crash in Nanaimo Friday

A two vehicle crash just before 9 pm on Friday closed the intersection of Hammond Bay Road and Highway 19a in Nanaimo for several hours.

 

RCMP say three adults were taken to hospital.

 

Mounties believe the 55 driver of a northbound Honda Accord lost control of her car, it hit the median, launched into the air and struck a Toyota Corolla that was sitting at the lights.

 

The 36 year woman in the Toyota was air lifted to a Vancouver hospital with serious life threatening head injuries.

 

Her 59 year old passenger, also a woman, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Honda had leg injuries and was also taken to the local hospital for treatment and later released.

 

As of Monday morning, the 36 year old woman was considered stable but in serious condition.

 

The intersection was closed for several hours while Nanaimo RCMP assisted by an RCMP Traffic Analyst examined the scene.

 

The cause of the crash is unknown. It appears alcohol was not a contributing factor.
