Small business owners caught off guard

Christy Clark’s minimum wage increase announcement was mostly well received.

Kim Darwin, President of the District of Sechelt Chamber of Commerce says the minimum wage increase was necessary, but it could have negative impacts as well for small business owners.

In making the announcement the province affirmed the small business tax cut coming down the pipeline will still go ahead, however, the CEO of the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce says in order for a small business to take advantage of it, they have to be profitable first.
Kim Smythe says the minimum wage announcement was a surprise for small business.
He says small business is not against wage increases but need predictability.

Smythe says the Chamber was under the impression wage increases would be tied to the consumer price index and that’s not what happened.
