The merchandise at the Treasure Island Thrift Shoppe in Cedar may be old, but there’s a very new way to buy it.

The store has started taking Bitcoin and Dogecoin, two kinds of “crypto-currency”.  The move puts Treasure Island on the cutting edge.  Only a few stores in BC take the virtual money.

Owner Brad Nelson says they’re as easy to use as any other form of payment. All that he and his customers need is the right smart phone app.

He also says the move to crypto-currencies is going to attract new customers to the store.

Bitcoins are also being taken at some Sunshine Coast businesses, such as the Roberts Creek Health Food Store.  The area has a strong connection to the technology; Bitcoiniacs, the Vancouver company the came up with the Bitcoin ATM, was founded by a trio of former Sunshine Coast residents
