Recycling Exchange hopeful of local government support

The Nanaimo Recycling Exchange is facing an uncertain future.

Their lease is expiring and Executive Director Jan Hastings says they need to build a new facility. They have the land, but not the 1.7 million needed to construct it.

She says they want the Regional District of Nanaimo and City of Nanaimo to help pay for it.

Hastings says beyond the actual recycling service they offer, they also run educational programs in schools and offer jobs to people with employment barriers.

She says talks with the RDN and the City have been going well, and she’s optimistic they’ll be able to get the funding they need to continue their work. The RDN has asked for staff to prepare a report and the NRE will be approaching City Council in the near future.
