SD 68 working its way through budget

School District 68 is still in the budget process.

Superintendent John Blain says to balance the budget, nine hundred and 70 thousand dollars in savings must be identified.

Under the microscope is the transporation of students to and from school

He says proposed changes in transportation, especially with regards to the courtesy riders are on the table and that means there may be some routes cancelled or combined…

He says the Ministry of Education does not provide funding for transportation which leaves each district to fund it from its operating budget.

Making the recommended changes would save the District four hundred thousand dollars.

Other cuts are to custodial, carpentry and grounds staff.

Also on the table is an effort to improve the growing class sizes at the secondary school level in the district by adding 6 more teachers to the payroll.

The average of 26 point 3 students per class in in the School District is the highest in the province.
