Man bear-sprayed during Nanaimo home invasion

Nanaimo RCMP are investigating a home invasion in which a man was sprayed with bear spray. They got a 9-1-1 call around 3:45am on Wednesday, February 19, from a home in the 3000 block of Barons Road. A 25-year-old man said two suspects broke into his home. He got into a fight with them and he was sprayed in the face during the altercation.

There’s no description of the suspects but police believe the attack was targeted. The victim says the suspects don’t seem to have taken anything from the home.

Nanaimo RCMP Constable Gary O’Brien says this is just the latest in a string on incidents in which bear sprayed was used as a weapon. He says using bear spray to commit a crime can yield serious criminal convictions for assault with a prohibited weapon.
