Suspect “tasered” to make an arrest

RCMP in Nanaimo had to use a taser on a man today (Fri) after he pulled a knife.

Police say the man was walking along Fillinger Crescent near Hammond Bay Road around 11 this morning carrying what was initially reported as a toy rifle.

Police say the firearm appeared to be a shotgun and when they started talking to the suspect, he threw the gun down, but pulled out a knife and started swearing at the officers.
One of the officers used a, conducted energy weapon, or taser to incapacitate the suspect to allow for an arrest.

The firearm turned out to be an unloaded pump action, pistol grip 12 gauge shotgun.

Both the knife and shotgun were seized and the suspect was taken to hospital for an evaluation.
