Refugee family from Eritrea now calling Nanaimo home

A family of refugees forced to flee their home in Eritrea in North Africa are now calling Nanaimo home. A grandmother, mother and two young children arrived on Monday.

They were privately sponsored by Nanaimo’s Neighbourhood Church. Associate Pastor Travis Barbour says some of their members met the family at the airport.

Barbour says they tried their best to make the family feel as comfortable as possible, despite the overwhelming circumstances. The congregation helped furnish a home for the family, complete with artwork and cards welcoming them to Nanaimo.

Now, Barbour says they’ll focus on helping the family integrate into the community.

Two other refugee families from Syria are expected to arrive in Nanaimo in the next few days.
