RDN delaying payment to the Island Corridor Foundation

The Regional District of Nanaimo is putting the brakes on handing over a hefty payment to the Island Corridor Foundation. RDN Chair Joe Stanhope says, given the lack of movement on the ICF’s push to get passenger trains rolling on the island, they’re stalling.

Stanhope says the money is half of what the RDN committed to the initiative, to make much-needed repairs to the E&N line. It’s part of the $5 million promised by the five regional districts from Victoria to Courtenay which the passenger trains would service.

Stanhope says the money would have been collected through property taxes, so that will happen in 2015 instead. Meanwhile the Island Corridor Foundation claims talks between Southern Rail and VIA Rail are continuing.
