4.3 magnitude earthquake shakes BC’s South Coast

A 4.3 magnitude earthquake that struck about 20 kilometers northeast of Victoria rattled houses and people’s nerves just after 11:30pm on Tuesday.

People on Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and the Lower Mainland experienced about 10 seconds of shaking.

Alison Bird is an earthquake seismologist with Natural Resources Canada.

Bird says there are no reports of damage or injuries associated with the quake, and none would be expected given its size and depth.

She says it’s a good reminder that larger, more damaging earthquakes will happen in BC, so it’s important to be prepared.

Bird says the preliminary measurement of 4.3 could change. Natural Resources Canada has about 100 seismographs throughout Western Canada to detect seismic activity.
