Nanaimo RCMP hosting first community meeting on property crime

Nanaimo RCMP are hosting what they hope will be the first in a series of community meetings aimed at tackling property crime.

Tonight’s meeting starts at 7 at McGirr Elementary School.

RCMP will be showing people the new online crime mapping tool, talking about Block Watches, and listening to residents’ concerns.

“One of the most effective means of deterring crime in your neighborhood is through the establishment of a Block Watch,” says Constable Gary O’Brien, the detachment’s Block Watch coordinator. He says setting up a Block Watch can get homeowners a break on insurance and more importantly, Block Watch neighbourhoods have seen crime rates drop by as much as 50 per cent.

North End Nanaimo has seen a spike recently in crimes like break-ins, thefts from vehicles and vandalism.
