Gabriola filmmaker looks at our "Sorry State"

BC’s multiculturalism minister has been touring the province talking to members of the Chinese community about an official apology for “historical wrongs”.

And, those official apologies are fodder for Gabriola Island filmmaker Mitch Miyagawa; a Japanese-Canadian whose step-mother was sent to a residential school.

His documentary “A Sorry State” was inspired by the government apologies for the internment of Japanese Canadians during World War II, to Chinese Canadians for the Head Tax, and to residential school survivors.

Miyagawa has also published an essay on the same theme.  It’s included in the third volume of the Aboriginal Healing Foundation’s truth and reconciliation series “Speaking My Truth“.

Miyagawa’s documentary can also be found online http://docstudio.tvo.org/story/sorry-state

People on the Sunshine Coast, by the way,  have an opportunity to learn more about residential schools at a special screening of the film “We Were Children” Feb 15th at the Raven’s Cry Theatre. The event begins at 1pm with a candlelight ceremony and prayer song.  There’s also a panel afterwards.
