Local governments on the Sunshine Coast say they’ll support groups sponsoring Syrian refugees

The first groups of Syrian refugees are arriving in BC, and in bigger centres like the Lower Mainland local governments are getting directly involved

On the Sunshine Coast, they’re planning more of a support role.

Sechelt Mayor Bruce Milne says they looked into it and decided the most appropriate thing to do is make sure the local groups working to sponsor refugees know they can turn to municipal hall for assistance.

SCRD Chair Garry Nohr says the Board hasn’t had any specific talks around the issue, but they’re ready to play a support role if asked.

At least two church groups on the Sunshine Coast are working to sponsor refugee families: St. John’s United, and the Christian Life Assembly.
