Former RCMP building eyed for affordable housing

It was one of the iconic location shots from the old Beachcombers TV series, but the former RCMP detachment in Gibsons is currently sitting vacant .

Now, Gibsons Councillors are hoping it can be turned to good use.

Stafford Lumley is Council’s liaison to the Sunshine Coast Housing Committee, which wants to be able to use the property.

Councillors voted Tuesday to lend their support to the idea.

But, because the building is owned by the federal government, the Squamish First Nation has a right to make a bid.

Mayor Wayne Rowe says he’s hoping there’s an opportunity to work with Ottawa, the province and the Squamish on the effort.

The old RCMP building in Sechelt was turned over for a similar project several years ago, that included adding on surplus modular units from the Whistler Olympics.
