VI Conservation Society says it's time to talk water

The dry winter hasĀ a local environmental group is telling people it’s time for a wider discussion on water conservation.

Laurie Gourlay, President of the Vancouver Island Conservation Society is calling on Island residents, environmental experts, and local governments to join in.

His group is hoping to create an Island-wide round table to look at solutions to several water issues, but in particular the danger we face in light of an unseasonably dry winter.

Gourlay says he doesn’t want to be an alarmist but points to Oregon and California where many lakes and reservoirs are now at less than 40 percent of capacity because of the winter drought.Ā  The state of California will not be distributing more water to local authorities.
