Voting underway across the country in 42nd General Election

Polls are open until 7 today, as the longest Canadian election campaign in more than a century wraps up.

And Elections Canada says they’re prepared, and they say they don’t expect the same issues with long lines that happened during advance voting.

Dorothy Sitek of Elections Canada says during advance voting they have to follow special rules – like only having one ballot box. She says on election day, the process is much more streamlined.

Sitek says one of the most common questions they get is whether your boss has to give you time off to vote: Every eligible voter is entitled to 3 consecutive hours to vote, so if you don’t have 3 hours open outside of work, your employer has to give you time – but they can choose when.

A key thing to remember is to have proper ID.  The best options are:

  • your driver’s licence
  • your provincial or territorial ID card
  • any other government card with your photo, name and current address

Sitek says although you can’t use it as ID, it can speed things up if you remember to bring your Voter Information Card with you.

Coast FM’s special election night coverage begins right after the polls close at 7pm, and we’ll be on-the-air with regular updates until the national and local races are decided.
