Local Posties not happy with Canada Post bombshell

Posties across the country are saying Canada Post’s decision to do away with direct-to-home mail delivery is a bad move.  The surprise decision was announced Wednesday as part of a 5 point plan to save 900-million dollars a year at the money-losing Crown Corporation.

About one-third of Canadian households still get direct delivery, and they’re mostly in older urban neighbourhoods.

Community mailboxes will now be installed everywhere in the country.

Stamps are also going up in price, to a dollar.

Charlene Penner is president of the Canadian Postal Workers Union Local 840 on the Sunshine Coast. She says people will find that price too high.  “It means that less people are going to mail things,” she says. “I sort of liken it to the ferries, really, you come to a point where you’ve priced yourself out of the market.”

Penner says the job losses will also hurt local economies, although Canada Post says most of the 8,000 job cuts will come through attrition.
