Nanaimo RCMP hosting public meeting

There’s been a big spike in property crimes in Nanaimo and that’s prompting RCMP to hold a public meeting next week. Constable Gary O’Brien says the meeting will focus on the north end, where they’ve noticed a recent jump in crime, but it’s the start of a broader initiative.

O’Brien they want show people how to use the new on-line crime mapping tool. It will show them where things like break and enters and vehicle thefts are happening in the city. O’Brien says they’ll also be talking about their Block Watch program, which he says is an effective way to deter crime. He says it has been shown to cut crime in half in some neighbourhoods and it can help homeowners score a 15 per cent reduction off their home insurance. The meeting is Thursday, February 13, at McGirr Elementary at 7pm.
