Onlookers and scientists thrilled by orcas at Departure Bay

A spectacle of nature in Nanaimo’s Departure Bay Monday.

A pod of orcas chased about 100 Pacific white-sided dolphins into the bay.

The manager of VIU’s Deep Bay Marine Field Station, Brian Kingzett, says transient orcas exclusively eat marine mammals like dolphins, seals and sea lions, but it’s very rare to see the whales in Departure Bay. let alone to see them there on the hunt.

Video shot by passengers aboard a ferry shows the whales aggresively hunting the dolphins, and they managed to nab at least 2. Check it out on our Facebook page.

DFO scientists took notes on the pod and flesh samples from one of the kills after the orcas moved on.
